Shatterproof vs. glass Christmas ornaments
Which one to order for a bulk run, a mailed client gift or a keepsake — an honest comparison of breakage, feel, printing and shipping.
The short answer
Choose shatterproof ornaments for any bulk order that will be shipped, mailed, handed out at an event or hung where children and pets are around — they survive a carton, a mailroom and a fall off the tree. Choose glass only when a small number of ornaments will be delivered by hand and the extra weight and sparkle justify careful packaging. If you want a premium keepsake that still travels, glazed porcelain or die-struck metal gives you the weight of glass without the fragility.
Side by side
| Shatterproof resin | Glass | |
|---|---|---|
| Breakage risk | Will not smash if dropped or knocked in transit | The most likely material to arrive broken |
| Weight & feel | Light; matte, gloss or glitter finish | Heavier; catches light the way people picture |
| Printing | Full-colour wrap printed edge to edge | Usually spot-colour logos; glass can crack under decoration heat |
| Shipping & mailing | Ships in bulk and posts individually | Needs protective packaging on every piece |
| Kids, pets & events | Safe to hand out and hang anywhere | Best kept to display and adult gifting |
| Best for | Corporate gifts, churches, schools, fundraisers, retail stock | Small hand-delivered keepsakes |
Durability: what actually goes wrong
Glass fails in two places: it can crack while it is being decorated, and it breaks in transit if a single piece is packed badly. On a run of hundreds of ornaments, that turns into replacements, delays and a box of shards arriving at a client’s desk.
Shatterproof resin is shatterproof rather than indestructible — the point is that it will not smash if it falls off a tree or gets knocked in a carton. That is the difference between a gift that arrives and one that arrives in pieces, which is why it is the default for anything that ships in volume.
Look and print quality
Glass still wins on weight and the way it catches tree lights, which is why it reads as premium. Shatterproof resin closes most of that gap with finish: gloss gives the traditional bauble shine, glitter catches the lights, and matte reads modern and photographs cleanly. Because resin takes a full wrap print, the design continues all the way around instead of stopping at a seam that faces the wall.
The verdict
Pick shatterproof if the ornaments are going in the post, to an event, onto a family tree or into a client gift box — in other words, for almost every bulk order.
Pick glass only for a handful of hand-delivered keepsakes where fragility is acceptable. Get Custom Christmas Ornaments does not include glass in its five ornament ranges; for premium gifts we point customers to porcelain, die-struck metal or a boxed corporate gift set.
